“They don’t read it properly.”

Helping pupils understand the demands of GCSE exam questions.

Tuesday 12th March 1pm-3:30pm Aldersley High School

Workshop aim:

The new GCSE specifications place greater demands on pupils’ literacy skills. Pupils without these skills can be held back in every subject. This session equips teachers of all subjects with strategies to help develop their pupils’ ability to comprehend what an exam question is asking them to do. Whilst the examples will be drawn from GCSE exam papers, the session will provide teachers with a reading comprehension activity sequence that can be applied to all assessment tasks with every year group in order to develop pupils’ reading comprehension skills and confidence over time. The activity sequence applies the techniques that all good readers use specifically to exam questions and, for those who find the session useful, can be followed up with further training showing how this can be used to develop pupils’ ability to read all types of text within lessons.

Workshop Facilitator: Helen Handford
